TESTING FOR QUALITY WITHOUT A REFRACTOMETER

Of course YOU may wish to check your family's food QUALITY without buying an industrial grade device. Testers obtain identical results by floating an inexpensive hydrometer in a container filled with fresh made juice. You may have a friend who homebrews beer who has a brix hydrometer (although many have shifted to refractometers). Actually, as earlier stated, the hydrometer was the tool first used by Professor Brix. One drawback, of course, is the inconvenience of requiring a pint or more of fresh juice. Another is that it is impossible (or very difficult) to gage the diffusion (of which more will be said later).

The same companies that sell refractometers often sell hydrometers.
